Independence Day

Independence Day

Today is the 49th anniversary of Malaysia’s Independence Day.

As a nation, we have progressed far and well. Although to some we are still considered a third world country, but in so many ways, we have moved beyond that. A third world country with first world facilities. Admittedly, we have much to progress and change but I’m proud of what we have achieved thus far.

Here’s wishing all Malaysian a Happy Independence Day and may we continue to enjoy the prosperity and peace we have as a multi-cultured nation. Happy Merdeka all!

Farewell PGS

August 25th, 2006 | 2 Comments | Posted in @Work

Fung Wan Online

Today is my last day at Phoenix Games Studio.

I first started work here at PGS in 2004 right after I graduated from college. Yes, I’m a fresh graduate. I went back to college after 8 years in the working world. Why? I was bored.

Game companies are rare in Malaysia. The industry is still in its infancy. That is very obvious when I came in to PGS. The way things are run is nothing short of a disaster. No procedures or documentations. Things are done because it felt right. But over the last 3 years, things have changed. PGS has matured and became more professional.

Working in PGS is extremely stressful. That’s evident in my CTO. When I came in I was introduced to a zombie named Hafiz. Today, he look more human. I came in to relief him of some of his responsibilities. That doesn’t make things easier but it does make you feel better knowing you’re not the only one struggling. Once the procedures and processes are in place, things became clearer and easier to manage. That took almost one and a half years to put in place. Not easy but it’s definitely worth the trouble.

Like any other company out there, there were ups and downs. There were many disagreements and disgruntled feelings. But I can’t honestly say I regretted working here. The team I worked with is fantastic. Everyone worked well with each other and we stick with each other. There were many fun times. But those fun times were created by ourselves. Management allowed it so all’s well.

Personally, I had fun GM-ing the test servers for FWO. I just loved making life miserable for the players. Everytime they pleaded to me, “P-level me pleeasse!” or “Give me a glowy pleeeeassseeee!”, I would go “muahahahaha….”

Those were fun times.

And now, it has all come to an end for me. I’m moving on and hopefully to something better. This is definitely something I’ll be taking with me for a very long time.

All the best to Phoenix Games Studio and thanks for everything that you’ve molded me into.

Tension @ PGS

August 17th, 2006 | 1 Comment | Posted in @Work

As the company prepares to close its doors, tension were running high. The month is coming to an end and people are still busy job hunting without any success. A lot of pent up anger and frustration began to erupt.

In all my 4 years of PGS, I always wanted to try out the electronic keyboard we got for our sound engineer. Cilix never allowed me to. And since there’s nothing much to lose anymore I fought him for it…

Prepare for battle

And I got my revenge. Revenge is sweet. See my wide smile?

Die!

But that was not the worst fight that happened in PGS. Kelvin, our PHP programmer, never forgave Hafiz for asking him to code in ASP. A sword fight was imminent.

Sword fight

But the victor cannot be decided by a sword duel but by the knowledge of the Force. Kelvin force push Hafiz to the ground.

force push

But Hafiz got to his feet before Kelvin can react. He then force choke Kelvin and lifted him up in the air. Yes, the force does exist in PGS.

force choke

In the end, the cheating jedi-wannabe plunged the Ultimate Sword into Kelvin and thus ending the battle.

Killed him

It was a spectacular battle! One that we will not easily forget. However, unknown to many, the Sith does not disappear so easily. There is always a master and an apprentice. One was killed but which one. *drum roll*

Behold!

Sith Lord Jarod

Sith Lord Jarod!

Stay tune for Episode 2. If we got budget that is…

How to be a Ninja!

August 7th, 2006 | 1 Comment | Posted in @Funnies

Okay, I’m pretty free now in the office. So I figured I better make use of my time constructively. And I thought what better way to do that then to teach people how to become a ninja!

Here’s something that was sent to me. So learn and practice hard. The path to become a ninja is as easy as putting on a shirt. Literally.

Laid Off

August 4th, 2006 | Comments Off | Posted in @Work

I honestly never thought that this day would come. I always thought that I would quit my company. Now it seems the company quit on me.

Well, I just got laid off. Actually, the entire company staff got laid off. After almost 4 years of operation, the company is closing down due to various reasons which I’m not at liberty to disclose here.

When the management announced the news to us, I was not surprised, shocked or angry. In fact, I did not feel anything. Nowadays nothing really surprises me anymore. Don’t ask me why. Maybe I’m in denial. However, I do feel sad.

It has been fun working here. Although there are many a time I would disagree with management on how things are run, I really did enjoy my time here. The work culture here is relax and fun. Although at times it can be frustrating when there’s lots of server problems and late working hours, I can say that I did not have any regrets.

The company was kind enough to give us a month notice and pay our last salary for this month. After that, we have to start looking for a job. Well, I should start looking for one now. But at this moment, I’m really not in the mood to do anything.

Maybe I need to let it sink in. I’ll see what happens tomorrow.
