This is why we should fight piracy…

October 12th, 2005 Posted in @Miscellaneous

Piracy comes in all forms. From music to software to ebooks. I want to talk about pirated movies today.

I was in Los Angeles when Star Wars Revenge of the Sith was released. A couple of hours prior to its official screening, hundreds of fans were already thronging in front of the Mann’s Chinese theater all dressed up as Yoda, Obi Wan, Darth Vader… almost the entire characters of Star Wars are represented there. But oblivious to the fans, not too far away, another crowd is busy thronging the back alley of some secluded place buying screener copies of the yet to be released third installment of the recent Star Wars trilogy. Although the authorities acted quickly on this pirates, quite a number were already sold. Recently, I discovered that some of these copies found its way across thousands of miles to the east in China, thanks to the internet no doubt.

Here’s the funny part. In order to sell these pirated copies of in China, someone has to translate the dialogue. The pirated DVD copies were translated to chinese and then somehow got re-translated back to english. I have no idea who did those translation but them translators are in desperate need of some basic english lessons. Here’s what happened. (Click on link below)
