Broadband & Bittorrents

October 27th, 2005 | 1 Comment | Posted in @Thoughts

Now that Jaring has launched its broadband service nationwide, the question on people’s mind now is this: Will the broadband providers block all bittorrent ports?

TMNet is Malaysia’s first nationwide broadband provider. However, its service has earned it the name TMNut. Hopefully Jaring will not follow in the footsteps of TMNut.

A majority of broadband users in the country are made up of the youth. So it is no surprise that most of the bandwidth is used for downloading torrents. Rumour has been spreading that these broadband providers will block the torrent ports effectively preventing people from downloading torrents. Many has voiced their intention to terminate their subscription should this happen. Of course we will just have to wait and see if this will eventually happen or not.

So here is my question: Besides surfing the net, checking emails and chatting with friends, what other uses are there for the internet? If most people use it to download torrents, it would be very much useless to use broadband once the ports are blocked. I can still check my emails and chat online with a dial-up connection. I don’t see why I should pay extra for the broadband if I don’t have much use for it.

What do I see!?

Someone once told me that art is a very subjective matter. I disagree with him until now. I have seen some of these logos before and it has never strike me where the ‘inspiration’ comes from because I did not see what ‘it’ was. Now I know. Perhaps this is some artist’s inside joke…

This is why we should fight piracy…

Piracy comes in all forms. From music to software to ebooks. I want to talk about pirated movies today.

I was in Los Angeles when Star Wars Revenge of the Sith was released. A couple of hours prior to its official screening, hundreds of fans were already thronging in front of the Mann’s Chinese theater all dressed up as Yoda, Obi Wan, Darth Vader… almost the entire characters of Star Wars are represented there. But oblivious to the fans, not too far away, another crowd is busy thronging the back alley of some secluded place buying screener copies of the yet to be released third installment of the recent Star Wars trilogy. Although the authorities acted quickly on this pirates, quite a number were already sold. Recently, I discovered that some of these copies found its way across thousands of miles to the east in China, thanks to the internet no doubt.

Here’s the funny part. In order to sell these pirated copies of in China, someone has to translate the dialogue. The pirated DVD copies were translated to chinese and then somehow got re-translated back to english. I have no idea who did those translation but them translators are in desperate need of some basic english lessons. Here’s what happened. (Click on link below)
